Excesive vibration is one of the biggest causes of fatigue and can have an unnecessary damaging effect on the airframe, propeller, engine, engine mount and avionics. It also makes flying an uncomfortable experience for pilots and passengers.
Lucily these vibrations can easily be reduced by performing a "Dynamic Propeller balancing" . All of the major propeller manufacturers recommend that this procedure is to be carried out frequently.
For the balancing an accelerometer is temporarily fixed to the engine, a digital RPM counter attached to the cowlings and reflective tape placed on the propeller. The equipment then measures the inches per second of movement (vibration) and then calculates a fix using weights attached at specified points. The balancing usually takes a few hours to complete with multiple static engine runs at around cruise RPM.
Mastenbroek has the equipment in house and is able to perform the procedure while you enjoy a cup of coffee.
